Usually about age 6 or when the child learns to read, although we have successful techniques for starting younger students as well. Contact us for more information about younger students!

Can girls / females take drum lessons?  [top]

Absolutely! Jim's daughter played all percussion and was an extraordinary quint player in high school. She also played in the Clemson Tiger Marching Band as well as the Clemson University Steel Band. Although percussion has been predominantly a male thing, more and more females are becoming proficient in percussion. (see the artlcle on Kara and Jessie here http://greenvilleonline.com/news/2005/04/21/2005042163007.htm Greenville News - Girls Beat The Drums Jim has several accomplished female students in private lessons, middle school, and high school percussion class.

Do I need to spend very much money on equipment to enroll in lessons?  [top]

No! You can get started with a pair of drum sticks and a practice pad for under $20. When you discover you or your child enjoys percussion, you can then invest in more equipment, instruments, etc.

What is a semi-private drum lesson?  [top]

We have seen the value and extreme positive progress in students taking a focused private lesson. We also are aware that finances can be an issue. So we have developed a semi-private drum lesson setting which also is working well. Students then share the cost (reduced price) of the lesson time yet still get a good amount of personal attention and focus. Jim uses motivational group dynamics when giving semi-private lessons. For some, the peer factors influence and produce great results. Semi-private lessons will be limited to a maximum of 5 students in one session. If you have a student interested in semi-private lessons, please contact us for additional information.
